A virtuoso trombonist with a sumptuous sound and fluid, expressive phrasing, Samuel Blaser is also an inspired composer, always seeking the balance between structure and freedom. On his upcoming double album Amaaka / Shadow, he brings together a remarkable quartet featuring pianist Russ Lossing, bassist Masa Kamaguchi, and drummer Billy Mintz — three master improvisers known for their depth, sensitivity, and creative interplay.
Firmly rooted in jazz tradition while embracing modern expression, Amaaka / Shadow is structured as a double CD: Amaaka presents a book of compositions by Blaser, while Shadow features original works by Lossing. Both parts were recorded with the same ensemble, offering two distinct yet interconnected musical visions — lyrical, exploratory, and deeply personal.
The title Amaaka merges “Ama” (Adam) and “Aka” (Oscar), the childhood pronunciations of Blaser’s sons’ names — a subtle nod to family and intimacy.
The project will be followed by an EP, Rosina, drawing on folk melodies from Emilia-Romagna in tribute to Blaser’s grandmother. A meditation on heritage and memory, Rosina extends the emotional and musical thread of the double
album.
