MARY HALVORSON’s - Code Girl

October 2019

!!!!!!! Winner of Downbeat 2019 Critics Poll „Guitar“: Mary Halvorson
2nd on list „Female vocalist“: Amirtha Kidambi !!!!!!!

Mary Halvorson's guitar sometimes sounds like R2-D2's drunken sister, Amirtha Kidambi beams the listener through time and space as she sings about storm clouds in alien tongues, and Adam O`Farill can melt metal with his breath.
"Code Girl" has a bizarre sci-fi atmosphere coloured by plenty of emotion. Halvorson sinks into her music, even disappears behind it. Her compositional expressiveness is astonishing and her unique signature sound is reminiscent of robot language. Kidambi's voice not only channels Halvorson's lyrics, but also adds another instrumental level to the complex sound of the band. Her improvisations on meaningless syllables suddenly develop a historical, ethnic or spiritual connotation through the use of Indian microtonal glissandi or classic opera vibrato. O` Farill usually plays the emotional counterpart to Halvorson. His trumpet doesn't simply shine and blaze, it also spans the entire emotional scale by purring, singing, screaming or sobbing. Michael Formarek on bass, Maria Grand on Saxophone and Tomas Fujiwara on drums stand at the helm of the ship, ensuring that the sound never drifts off too far into space. The overall effect remains extraterrestrially romantic, disturbingly mystical and profoundly bizarre. (Sandra Hupfauf)

Code Girl is the latest project of guitarist and composer Mary Halvorson, and her first project for which she has composed both lyrics and music. The band has been described as “...a bold experiment in song form” by The New York Times. Deftly interpreted by Amirtha Kidambi (vocals), Maria Grand (saxophone, vocals), Adam O’Farrill (trumpet), Michael Formanek (bass) and Tomas Fujiwara (drums), the music synthesizes influences of jazz, folk and improvisation to create an original take on songwriting. Code Girl’s debut album was a top ten record in the annual NPR Jazz Critic’s Poll.

Halvorson's music has always had the capacity to surprise, but Code Girl amounts to the most startling move in her solo career.”
-Nate Chinen, NPR

“With strong compositions delivered by an excellent ensemble, the album's puzzles remain a treat to continually almost crack.”
-Justin Cober-Lake, PopMatters

“(Code Girl) is an album that touches upon various musical traditions in oblique fashion, but it’s most recognizable as yet another major step in Halvorson’s meteoric ascent.”
-Peter Margasak, bandcamp daily
