KOKAYI sets out to tour in 2024 with his band of multidimensional improvisationlists: Drew Kid (keys), Sheldon Thwaites (drums), and Eliot Seppa (bass) inviting audiences to participate in experiments of rhythm, language, spontaneous composition, and head nodding vibes.
Washington DC-based, Grammy-nominated MC/preeminent improvisational vocalist KOKAYI has toured as a vocalist, MC, and DJ with Nate Smith +KINFOLK, Ambrose Akinmusire Origami Harvest, Steve Coleman Five Elements, Terri Lyne Carrington +Social Science and Whose Hat is This. The 2023 Guggenheim Fellow for music composition continues to explore the limitations of improvised music and the art of rhyming in different musical constructs including jazz, hip-hop, spoken word, and electronica. KOKAYI began his career as part of Steve Coleman’s Metrics, Mystic Rhythm Society, and Five Elements. Later signing with BMG France and Label Bleu as part of Opus Akoben; serving as producer and MC on Art of War (BMG/France) and Raw Life (Label Bleu), respectively. His eponymous album will arrive in the Spring of 2024.
