MARY HALVORSON’s - Code Girl

October 2019

“Halvorson's music has always had the capacity to surprise, but Code Girl amounts to the most startling move in her solo career.”
-Nate Chinen, NPR

Following on her critically lauded octet recording Away With You, composer and guitarist Mary Halvorson beg an a new chapter with Code Girl,  the recorded debut of the band sharing the same name. The group features rising-star vocalist Amirtha Kidambi, trumpet phenom Ambrose Akinmusire, acclaimed bassist Michael Formanek, and frequent Halvorson collaborator and master drummer Tomas Fujiwara. Code Girl  is a major leap in concept and execution, one in which ”NYC’s least-predictable improviser” (Howard Mandel, City Arts) crystallizes her compositional approach, with poetic lyrics set alongside and entwined with intricate small-group arrangements.

As with every one of Halvorson’s records, on offer is the single-minded pursuit of a creative concept, as opposed to an adherence to or examination of existing stylistic conventions. Accordingly, the focus of Code Girl is most assuredly the songs themselves. Developed and composed throughout 2016, the music retains many of the hallmarks of Halvorson’s previous work – angular melodic lines intersect and resolve in unexpected ways and by and large, the music is intricately and extensively composed. Still, the band of A-list improvisers is given ample opportunity to respond and react to one another and, as one would expect on a Mary Halvorson record, to improvise.

“With strong compositions delivered by an excellent ensemble, the album's puzzles remain a treat to continually almost crack.”
‪-Justin Cober-Lake, PopMatters‬

“(Code Girl) is an album that touches upon various musical traditions in oblique fashion, but it’s most recognizable as yet another major step in Halvorson’s meteoric ascent.”
-Peter Margasak, bandcamp daily

“Mary Halvorson expresses her unique sound loud and clear, no matter with whom who she’s collaborating. Those pitter-patter bursts of melody are like staggered waves of raindrops against a tin roof—there’s no mistaking the sequences of guitar notes for anybody else but her. But her uniqueness isn’t just limited to her sound; it extends to her vision as well.”
