URI CAINE & THEO BLECKMANN

Two of New York’s most creative and irreverent jazz musicians take on the Western classical art songs. Pianist Uri Caine played in bands led by Philly Joe Jones, Hank Mobley, Odean Pope, Bobby Durham and Grover Washington among others and has recorded over 33 records as leader for Blue Note, Tzadik and most notably Winter & Winter. His Goldberg Variations received critical acclaim as well as multiple takes on Mahler’s vast oeuvre. As a composer, Caine has worked with orchestras and chamber music ensembles world-wide, including the American Composers Orchestra, the Vienna Volksoper, the BBC concert orchestra, Concerto Koln and the Arditi Quartet.
Theo Bleckmann is a multi GRAMMY® nominated vocalist, composer and ECM recording artist who has recorded over 20 albums and collaborated with artists such as Ambrose Akinmusire, Sheila Jordan, Kneebody, Ben Monder, Bang on a Can All-Stars, and, most prominently, Meredith Monk. As a composer Bleckmann has received commissions from the American Composers Orchestra, E-Mex Berlin, and Jack Quartet.

Caine and Bleckmann take on repertoire that is usually reserved for the classical vocal recital but both have a long history of traversing between (contemporary) classical music and jazz. They have recorded and toured together -- their love and musicality for these songs make this a jazz concert of unparalleled innovation, joy, playful improvisations, turning Western classical tradition on its head. Their repertoire includes song-cycles by Schumann, Schubert and Wagner and songs by Gershwin, Kurt Weill, Hanns Eisler, Scarlatti, Mahler and many more.
