ROB MAZUREK Exploding Star Orchestra

Soundcloud

"I thought the whole band was exceptional…very shocking, actually, to see
how well they absorbed all of that Sun Ra influence and went on to do their
own thing."
— Amiri Baraka, from interview on RAI Radio 3 after seeing the World Premier of
Galact ic Parables Vol. 1

Exploding Star Orchestra has been listed among the top Big Bands in the DownBeat
Critics Poll every year since it’s formation in 2005. In 2015, the orchestra celebrates 10
years of extraordinary music with the release of the 6th recording, Galactic Parables
Vol. 1 (Cuneiform and Infinity Dogs) and the debut of Mazurek’s 10th suite of music for
the orchestra, Galactic Parables Vol. 2, commissioned by Teatro Manzoni.
Cornetist and composer Rob Mazurek founded the all-star Exploding Star Orchestra in
2005, on commission from the Chicago Cultural Center and the Jazz Institute of
Chicago, to investigate Chicago's diverse avant-garde, post-rock, jazz and creative
music traditions. The group made its debut with a new suite of music at Chicago’s Jay
Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. Ten years later, Exploding Star Orchestra features
a bevy of the world's finest improvisers from Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and Sao
Paulo, Brazil and includes members of Tortoise, Isotope 217, Black Earth Ensemble,
Hurtmold and notable AACM members.
In the last nine years, Mazurek has premiered nine suites for Exploding Star Orchestra
on three continents. His boundary-free compositions are founded on the principle of
democratic improvisation, where each member contributes equally to the ensemble’s
sound and to Mazurek’s overall vision. Well known as an important vehicle for
Mazurek’s imaginative, idiosyncratic compositions, this capaciously inventive, variable
and volatile large ensemble regularly features critically acclaimed, unwavering creative
souls such as Roscoe Mitchell, Nicole Mitchell, Matana Roberts, Jeff Parker and
Angelica Sanchez.
