Dave Douglas' Brass Ecstasy first performed in 2005 during the Festival of New Trumpet Music in New York City. The band is a quintet of trumpet, two trombones, tuba, and drums. It was founded in memory of Lester Bowie, trumpeter, arranger, and improviser, and in the manor of his long-standing group, Brass Fantasy, the group performs re-arranged contemporary pop music and original pieces interspersing groove, improvisation, and melody. Continuing to honor Bowie and his legacy, the band will perform new compositions by Douglas commissioned by the 2008 Chicago Jazz Festival.Here is funk, gospel, and bebop held in perfectly balanced, exuberant jazz arrangements.
