A spin-off of the plectrist’s Spiritual Unity—a group devoted to the music of late free-jazz saxophonist Albert Ayler—the trio is borderless, as likely to issue lesser-known John Coltrane compositions like “Attaining” and “Dearly Beloved” as to offer twisted takes on more hackneyed fare like “Autumn Leaves” and “Take Five.” But it’s hardly the song forms that matter; the magic happens between the lines, when Grimes’s thick, earthy tones, Taylor’s smart, muscular propulsions and Ribot’s jagged, stinging leads wash away familiar melodies through dense, jarring group improvisations. And this unit is nothing if not spontaneous; its journeys can swing one moment and rock the next, trading the bright moments of jazz for metallic gloom.		 Line Up:
